Helthy Drinking Water

Need for healthy water:
At an average a man needs around 3 to 4 liters of water per day to drink. Water in our body acts as a fuel to provide immunity and easy the flow of blood. Scientific research has proved that drinking pure water can drive out harmful diseases.

Now a big question arises, where can we get pure water?
In small villages / towns we can use ground water, as ground / earth is considered to be natural water filter. Here population is less and pollution level is very low, so chances of water to get polluted is negligible, reason is there are large number of trees. Tree while sucking water from ground also sucks out harmful chemicals present in ground water, thus making ground water purer and healthier.

In cities population is high and so imperatively pollution level is also high. Mathematically Pollution and population are directly proportional. Increase in population increases pollution and vice versa.
Pollution pollutes the environment and in cities trees are cut down for infrastructure development. As there are no enough trees to suck out pollutants ground water remains polluted. Ground water in cities are not pure / healthy  due to deforestation and pollution. Harmful chemicals remain in ground and result in unhealthy water.
In most cities local municipal corporation provides water, but water provided by them is also not healthier or directly usable. Municipal corporations gets water from rivers or lakes, store them and then they supply to public, and due to pollution again purity is not guaranteed for this water as well.

Remedy:
We can use market available water purifiers, to purify the water. In market we have wide range of water purifiers like RO, RO+UV, Sediment filters, Sediment+Carbon filters etc. We can pick them based on impurity level of our water.

Most people blindly buys water purifier without having basic knowledge of product or types or water.
Before picking your product you should know water impurity level.
Water impurity level is measured in TDS (Total Dissolved solvents).
Now a big question arises, how to measure TDS level in water?
In market we have TDS measuring equipment’s which will cost 200 – 300 INR (Indian Nation Rupee) / $5 - $6, this helps measuring impurity level / TDS level in water. Instructions to use this equipment is available in the user manual of that product.

Human body needs 100 - 150 TDS content in drinking water, so TDS level in this range is considered to be good water.

Below table illustrates required filters to purify water based on TDS levels.

TDS (ppm)
Filter needed to purify water
Explanation
0 – 50 PPM
Sediment Filter + Carbon Filter + UF Membrane + TDS Multiplier
Average TDS level needed in drinking water is between 100 – 150 PPM, as TDS level is very low here TDS multiplier shall be added here to bring up TDS level.
50 – 100 PPM
Sediment Filter + Carbon Filter (Pre + Post) + UF Membrane
Here TDS level just below the required level, so Post Carbon filter shall be used to fill the gap.
100 – 200 PPM
Sediment Filter + Carbon Filter (Pre) + UF Membrane
In this scenario TDS level is in correct range, so other filters is enough for purification.
200 – 2000 PPM
Sediment Filter + Carbon Filter (Pre + Post) + UF Membrane + RO Membrane
In this scenario TDS level exceeds normal range. RO membrane is used here to bring down the TDS level to normal range.
> 2000 PPM
-
TDS level is too high; RO membrane cannot be used here to bring down TDS level. Recommended one is go for RO plant which costs (INR 30000 – 60000 / $400 - $800)

Make your own Purifier

Most people have a question in mind! Can I make my own water purifier? The answer is yes it is possible.
Assembling the filter can save you 70 to 80 % of your money.
Below figure shows the model of good quality RO purifier.

Sediment Filter: To filter our Rust, sand, suspended particles. Tap water would be pre-filtered first before being filtered again in your water purifier. In addition to filtering out a particular contaminant this may also extend the life of the filter in your water purifier.

Pre-Carbon Filter: Reduces chlorine,  organics line VOC, THM other harmful chemicals; odour.

UF Membrane: Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane is a pressure-driven barrier to suspended solids, bacteria, viruses, endotoxins and other pathogens used to produce water with very high purity and low silt density. It can serve as a treatment for surface water, ground water, and biologically treated municipal effluent (membrane bio-reactor and tertiary treatment). UF can be used as pretreatment for reverse osmosis systems or as a final filtration stage membrane systems.

RO Pump: To provide pressure to RO membrane.

RO Membrane: Used to reduce TDS level in water (salt, oil contents etc). It removes 98 % dissolved contents in water like salt, chemicals, oil etc.

Post-Carbon Filter: Water from post RO is usually tasteless as it removes its dissolved contents. Post-Carbon filter adds Taste and minerals which are required.

Conclusion:
Water is elixir of life, so use it preciously and don't waste water.
Also remember earth is the natural resource available to purify water, and trees act as the filters to remove chemicals, salt and dissolved contents.
Don't cut down trees, if a tree is cut then immediately plant it in a place where it would grow undisturbed. It is our duty to protect environment, so save our environment. Go Green!!!!!
